OUR SMALL LOT WINES

2019 MERLOT

$ 26.00/ Btl

Fruit for this wine was selected from the Similkameen Valley, a first for Tumble Wines. Known as the Organic Farming Capital of Canada, the Similkameen is characterized by long sunny days and winds that run up and down the valley, creating a dry and arid climate where vineyards thrive and disease pressures are kept at bay.

At harvest, hand picked grapes were de-stemmed and crushed into one ton bins allowing for cold soak prior to fermentation extracting color and flavor into the juice.  At the first sign of natural fermentation activity we added selected yeast cultures to ensure primary fermentation completion. Punch downs to submerse the skins were done by hand 2-3 times daily and temperature peaked at about 28-30C.  Following a short post fermentation maceration the wine was pressed to French oak barrels, 25% of which were new as to not overpower the wine with oak flavor.  There it rested for its 14 month aging period before being blended and bottled the following winter.

Tasting Notes:  Black cherry, plum, cedar, vanilla, earth and dried herbs.  Plush mouthfeel, with firm tannin structure and refreshing acidity on the back end of this cool climate Merlot.

2018 WIND BLOWN WHITE

$ 20.00/ Btl

Situated on the western shores of Osoyoos Lake Our Cactus Crescent Vineyard is only a single acre in size. White varietals are comprised of predominately Chardonnay, with a single row each of Sauvignon Blanc, Muscat,  and Viogner.  With such small lots of fruit we decided the day of harvesting to pick everything as a vineyard blend - 67% Chardonnay, 14% Muscat, 13% Sauvignon Blanc and 6% Viogner.

Wanting to showcase texture and complexity on this white blend, wine making was a little more involved. The combined fruit was whole cluster pressed and settled in stainless steel tanks prior to racking to barrel.  Fermentation occurred in neutral barrels, (French Oak with Acacia heads) with copious lees stirring for texture and weight on the pallet.  After barrel aging for 5 months this wine was bottled lightly fined and filtered.

Tasting Notes:  Ripe pear, apple, pineapple, and lemon flavors compliment a slightly savory, dried flower aroma.  Round silky mouthfeel is balanced by lingering (but not awkwardly lingering) acidity on the finish, making this a versatile food  wine.  Serve only slightly chilled.

2019 RIESLING

$ 22.00/ Btl

Tumble wines leased this vineyard realizing its high potential to produce Riesling in South East Kelowna.  The sandy loam soils of this site are broken up by three distinct veins of pure sand that run perpendicular to the rows, giving the site its "Sandbar Vineyard" name. The 2019 vintage was looking spectacular until a cool and wet September had something to say about that.  While sugar accumulation slowed, flavors continued to develop and acids remained high. A hard frost on October 11th forced us into harvesting on October 14th at 22 brix.

Wine making was textbook Riesling for this vintage. Grapes were whole cluster pressed and settled prior to transferring clean juice to temperature controlled stainless steel tanks. Classic approach if we do say so ourselves.  Low temperatures and yeast strains selected for aromatic white wines were employed and fermentation was halted with just enough residual sugar to balance the bright acidity of 2019.

Tasting Notes:  Lemon, lime zest, green apple, flowers and honey flavors and aromas compliment a slightly mineral finish.  Don't be fooled by the residual sugar on this wine, the tension between acid and sugar on the finish of this wine keeps you coming back for more.

2020 PINOT NOIR
$ 25.00 / Btl

Situated on the western shores of Osoyoos Lake Our Cactus Crescent Vineyard is only a single acre in size. Our Pinot Noir block is almost 20 years old, and makes up about two thirds of the vineyard.  Less than half of this was selected based on lower yields and smaller clusters go into our Pinot Noir this year. Two bins of fruit were hand picked on Oct 1st 2020, and fermented in an ultra small lot, producing less than two barrels of wine.

Hand harvested clusters were destemmed into a small fermentation bin, where the whole berries cold soaked for 4 days prior to fermentation. Two to three punch downs per day were completed to submerge skins into the fermenting juice, and after about 17 days pressed to netural french oak.   After barrel aging for 8 months this wine will be bottled in Summer 2021 for an earlier release Pinot Noir.
